Student of the Month May 2010
Chris is the 16 year old son of Sharon D. Allen and Steve C. Herron. Chris is in the 11th grade at Northern High School in Flint, Michigan. Chris’ strengths are reading, math, and English. Two of Chris’ goals are to achieve a perfect “36” on the ACT and to attend Morehouse College. Mr. Herron actively engages to develop critical analytical skills by using internet based technologies to collaborate with other students throughout the country in accessing learning content. As well, Mr. Herron is a member of an elite group of students who will be publishing their first book in January 2011. The book will address and examine economic theories of great African American leaders. Some of Chris’ interests are swimming/lifeguarding, playing baseball, the saxophone and the piano. Chris is an active member of the Alpha Esquires.

The 13 year old daughter of Anna and William Booker is an 8th grade student at Clippert Academy Middle School in Detroit. Evette's strengths are reading and math. Evette's is working tirelessly to realize a perfect "36" on the ACT. Evette's primary interests are Medicine, Golf, and Writing. She is a member of Hollywood Golf. She has been a competitive golfer for 8 years and looking forward to playing collegiate golf. Evette will be launching the inaugural TLAB Scholar Blog in April 2010.
Student of the Month Febuary 2010
Malcolm C. Parrish was the first TLAB Scholar to realize one of our targeted reading performance standards. Malcolm now reads at 850 wpm (words per minute) and 90% plus comprehension rate! He is an exceptional leader, student and athlete. Malcolm is a freshman at Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia. He is majoring in Economics and a member of the Morehouse Business Association. Also, he is a member of the Morehouse Golf Team and volunteers at the Frederick Douglass Teaching Institute in Atlanta.
He graduated from Detroit County Day in 2009 while earning cum laude honors. Malcolm was captain of Country Day's Varsity Golf Team and was a member of the Science Olympiad team. While at Detroit Country Day School, Malcolm's civic interest included volunteering at Gleaners Food Bank and Metro Detroit's Summer in the City program.He also served as a teaching intern at Hollywood Golf Institute. During the spring of his senior year, Malcolm spent time learning and studying investment management while interning at Smith Barney.
